Berlin has three fare zones:
- Zone A covers the city centre and is delimited by the S-Bahn circle;
-
Zone B reaches until the boundaries of Berlin;
- Zone C comprises the surroundings of Berlin (e.g. Potsdam, Oranienburg);
According to your requirements you can purchase AB, BC or ABC tickets combining the respective zones. The regular tariff applies to adults, the reduced tariff to children aged between 6 and 13 years; for children under 6 years public transport is free. Tickets are available at one of the numerous BVG (underground company) or S-Bahn selling points as well as at ticket machines on the platforms.
Berlin has one of the oldest and most extensive subway networks in Europe. The rapid transit network actually consists of two independent systems, the U-Bahn with 9 lines, and the S-Bahn.
The U-Bahn operates as a metro system with trains running underground, while the S-Bahn is a longer distance commuter service. There is a great deal of overlap between the two systems and many stations have both platforms.
U-Bahn is a BVG property while the S-Bahn is an independent property (S-Bahn GmbH)
The U-Bahn network is very dense and has 9 lines. During rush hours trains are very frequent, every 1 or 2 minutes. U-Bahn runs start at 5am and stop at midnight except for U1 and U9 that during the weekends give a overnight service.
Also the S-Bahn network is very dense and has 17 lines. More or less the S-Bahn covers the same routes of the U-Bahn but run beyond the confines of the city. Trains run every 10-20 minutes.
