During the late 19th century the quarter of Kreuzberg was a working-class area. After the Second World War many people left the damaged buildings. A population of artists, foreigners, unemployed and members of sub-cultures remained. Today it´s an area rich in contrasts: luxury apartments stand next to ancient and ruined buildings. In the Allied Museum you can visit the former guardhouses, like for example the “Checkpoint Charlie”. The rich collection of the museum includes documentations of the Cold War. In the area you will also find the wonderful Renaissance-style building in which is the Martin-Gropius-Bau, with wonderful interior courtyard, the impressive atrium and rich decorations. The building houses different series of exhibitions of art, photography and architecture.
