VOLKSPARK FRIEDRICHSHAIN
The Volkspark Friedrichshain, one of Berlin´s first public park, is a big garden complex with beautiful nooks and crannies. It was laid out during 1840, based on a design of Peter Joseph Lenne, whose originally idea was to create an alternative Tiergarten for the inhabitants of the eastern districts of the city. The park is the perfect location for relaxing, you will feel like in a dream with the wonderful fountain of Fairy Tales, the “Märchenbrunnen”, which was built from 1902 to 1913 by Ludwig Hoffmann. The fountain in Neo-Baroque style is surrounded by fairytale characters by the well-known Brothers Grimm. Furthermore the park has attractive grounds, a number of lakes, ponds and different children’ s playgrounds. |
KARL- MARX ALLEE
The Karl-Marx Allee is a huge monumental boulevard of Socialist Realist architecture in Germany, built between 1952 and 1960 by the architects Hartmann, Henselmann, Hopp, Leucht, Paulick and Souradny. Until 1961 the boulevard was named “ Stalinallee” because the route to the east leads on to Poland and Moscow. Today it’ s named after the political philosopher and social theorist Karl Marx. After the destruction during the Second World War the street was widened to 90 m, later huge apartment buildings and many shops were built. The façades of the buildings often contain traditional Berlin motives by Karl Friedreich Schinkel. Most of them are covered by architectural ceramics. Now this buildings are considered historic monuments. Landmarks of the alley are the two towers on Frankfurter Tor, which have been restored after the unification of Germany. |
EAST SIDE GALLERY
The East Side Gallery is a 1300 m long section of the Berlin Wall. On the West Berlin’ s side the Wall was used for graffiti paintings. The largest open air gallery in the world was opened on September 1990. 118 different artist from 21 countries have painted several pictures on the Wall. The most famous pictures are “Brotherly Kiss” and “Fatherland”. Many of the paintings have been overpainted with graffiti and overwritten with signatures by tourists. In 2000 several paintings of the East Side Gallery were re-created. |
RIGAER STRASSE
The pretty lain of Rigaer Strasse is mainly characterized by the colorful graffiti made by the punk and alternative communities that once met here. Today you can admire the existing paintings or sip a drink relaxing in one of the bar. |
